ECTACO: View from Russia - Pros and cons of electronic books.

Part 1. "Goodies"

Exploring topics relating to e-books, more readers, we found a funny topic "the Pros and cons of electronic books", in which many people are involved , so much and appears opinions. We did not begin to describe the advantages and disadvantages of individual e-books, and tried to unite the majority of opinions about these devices and to add some comments.

1. The screen, which are not tired eyes.

The readers are used screens on e-ink. They work in the reflected light (that is, do not require a backlight) and to look more like the gray plastic with printed on top of the letters. No backlight and incredible sharpness of the letters a favourable effect on the eyes - they don't get tired from a long read. In addition, the screens on electronic ink consume very little energy, that allows readers work without recharging weeks.

Comment: a fairy tale about eye strain walk on the internet for several years already. In our opinion it is a kind of advertising trick, so I know for myself - the eyes may get tired from reading an ordinary paper books, so what about those horror stories you can not think. By the way TFT display the same tired eyes - tried it myself.

2. The opportunity to have in one hand hundreds of books

With the e-reader never arises the question, what kind of books to take with you today. And it does not take a couple of boxes. Your library is always at hand and always weighs about two hundred grams. Modern readers allow you to expand the memory with SD cards up to 32 Gb - there can accommodate dozens, if not hundreds of thousands of books.

Comment: I agree completely, but try to read 3-5-7 books at the same time. Might get a funny situation.

3 . Search, notes, and fonts.

One of the main advantages of e-books stems from the lack of paper books - lack of proper search. Even the most detailed contents of the index of the problem, alas, is not the answer. Also, readers give the opportunity to leave an infinite number of notes "in the fields" (no need to reach for the pencil, to leave in the book of mark) , it is convenient, when the book will be used as source material for any of their own work. Bookmarks are reliable and fall out of the book may not. Also paper books you can often disappoint print quality, color or paper size and type of font. In the e-book text you can format the way you want, and he will be what you want to see it, and the clarity of the display of the majority of the readers of the text exceeds the quality of even the best printing in paper books.

4. The presence of the dictionary and multimedia.

E-book allows you to combine text, not only with bright pictures, but with the audio, and video files. (of course, in works of art this is unnecessary, but in encyclopedias and technical literature, this function will be very helpful). And integrating in the book dictionary, can be much faster cope about the values of foreign words. Perhaps we can add that this is a convenient way to learn languages and to add to the vocabulary in the road.

Comments: the glossary in the e-book is great, but very few producers of this issue is concerned. Apparently the problem is that serious dictionary databases is very scarce and expensive product.

5. Access to the bookstore from any location

More and more readers are equipped with GSM/Wi-Fi-modules, which allow to access the internet. Usually the access is limited to special sites, where the user can easily find, buy and immediately download a new book. Also, the e-reader can automatically receive fresh issues of the electronic versions of newspapers and magazines.
Comment: in our opinion such readers practically very few, and those that exist have a hard peg to the existing bookshops. A silly situation.
